Australia Weather

Australia is home to a variety of climatic regions. While it is true the majority of the country is hot-desert or semi-arid grassland, there are also other subtropical regions in the Southeast and East of the country. The northern coast of Australia generally has a tropical climate, except for a small region in the extreme North of Queensland wich falls within the Equitorial climate zone. A temperate climate can be found in Tasmania, Victoria, most of the coastal areas of New South Wales and South Australia, small parts of Queensland, and in the Australian Capital Territory.

Product Description:
Comprehensively updated in it's 2nd edition, The Weather and Climate in Australia and New Zealand provides an introduction to the basic concepts underlying the science of the atmosphere from a Southern Hemisphere perspective, and establishes the global setting within which the weather and climate of Australia and New Zealand operate. The book introduces the basic science of the atmosphere, including its physical structure and composition, and the planetary circulation that lays the foundation for Australian weather and climate. The next section describes the characteristics f aim masses and atmospheric motion, explains the interactions that produce mid-latitude and tropical weather systems and discusses weather forecasting in this region. The book then focuses on selected aspects of the mesoscale, regional and local weather systems, and on climate patterns commonly observed across urban and rural areas of Australia and New Zealand. Finally, past climate change, contemporary variability and future scenarios are examined, and the possible links between human activity and climate variability are outlined, with particular emphasis on this region. New to this edition is the significant expansion of detail in chapter 4. Further explanation is given of atmospheric humidity and atmospheric stability, including more detail on the stability of layers of air. Extra material on orographic rainfall and some technical aspects, such as the adjustment of station level pressure measurement to sea level is also included. All other chapters have been updated with new material from recent research.

Product Description:
Grassfires presents the latest information from CSIRO on the behavior and spread of fires in grasslands. This second edition follows ten years of research aimed at improving the understanding of fundamental processes involved in the behavior of bushfires and grassfires.

The book has been extensively revised and new case studies have been added to reflect the latest findings in research and investigations. The book covers all aspects of fire behavior and spread in the major types of grasses in Australia. It examines the factors that affect fire behavior in continuous grassy fuels; fire in spinifex fuels; the effect of weather and topography on fire spread; wildfire suppression strategies; and how to reconstruct grassfire spread after the fact. The three fire-spread meters designed by CSIRO and used for the prediction of fire danger and rate of spread of grassfires are explained and their use and limitations discussed.

This new edition expands on the historical view of grassfires with respect to extensive Aboriginal burning, combustion chemistry, flame structure and temperature, spotting and spread in discontinuous/eaten out fuels, and the effect of wind in complex terrain. The case studies in the chapter “Wildfires and Their Suppression” have been updated and include the major wild grassfire events of recent years, the January 2003 ACT fires and the 2005 Wangary, SA fire. The “Myths, Facts and Fallacies” chapter includes new myths and a new section on personal safety during a wild grass fire.

Of interest to all rural fire fighters and rural landholders, students and teachers of courses on landscape and ecological processes, rural and peri-urban dwellers, fire authorities and researchers.
