Darwin
Darwin is the largest city and capital of the North Territory of Australia.
The city's population was 105,991 as of
2006.
The city was originally established in 1869 as "Palmerston" (after the British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston).
The area was at first settled and administered by South Australia, by the adminstration was transfered to the
Commonwealth (federal) government in
1911. The city's name was
changed to Darwin at the time of this transfer
During World War II, on
February 19th
1942, Darwin
was bombed by 188 Japanese aircraft, in the first of a series of Japanese air-raids, and the most
serious attack on Australia in the country's history. At least 243 people died during
this air raid, which is somtimes dubbed the "Pearl Harbor of Australia".
