Darwin

Darwin is the largest city and capital of the North Territory of Australia. The city's population was 105,991 as of 2006.

The city was originally established in 1869 as "Palmerston" (after the British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston). The area was at first settled and administered by South Australia, by the adminstration was transfered to the Commonwealth (federal) government in 1911. The city's name was changed to Darwin at the time of this transfer

During World War II, on February 19th 1942, Darwin was bombed by 188 Japanese aircraft, in the first of a series of Japanese air-raids, and the most serious attack on Australia in the country's history. At least 243 people died during this air raid, which is somtimes dubbed the "Pearl Harbor of Australia".

Product Description:
To most visitors and locals, Darwin is a vibrant, tropical city in the Top End. Although not always obvious to visitors, Darwin is also a living Aboriginal cultural landscape. "Aboriginal Darwin" peels back layers to show the rich heritage and complex cultures of Aboriginal people, both before and since colonisation. It includes contemporary and historical sites that range from the harbor to the beaches, monsoon forests, gardens, parks, camping places, exhibitions, cultural displays and buildings in the CBD, supplemented by information about sites not accessible to visitors. There are as many ways of seeing Aboriginal Darwin as there are Aboriginal people. This guide provides insights into the enormous economic, cultural, social and historical contributions of Aboriginal people to the city. Beautifully illustrated, "Aboriginal Darwin"'s easy-to-use layout allows users to explore at their own pace.
