Darwin

Darwin is the largest city and capital of the North Territory of Australia. The city's population was 105,991 as of 2006.

The city was originally established in 1869 as "Palmerston" (after the British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston). The area was at first settled and administered by South Australia, by the adminstration was transfered to the Commonwealth (federal) government in 1911. The city's name was changed to Darwin at the time of this transfer

During World War II, on February 19th 1942, Darwin was bombed by 188 Japanese aircraft, in the first of a series of Japanese air-raids, and the most serious attack on Australia in the country's history. At least 243 people died during this air raid, which is somtimes dubbed the "Pearl Harbor of Australia".
